Welcome To Daytona Beach
An
unbroken strand of beach stretches for 10-1/2 miles through Daytona
Beach and its neighbor to the south, Daytona Beach Shores. The smooth,
hard packed sand can be as wide as 500 feet at low tide. The most
noticeable thing about the beach, besides its sheer size, is that
vehicles are allowed on most of the beachfront. So driveable are
the sands of Daytona that car races were first held on the beach
in the early twentieth century. The legacy of its days as a racecourse
is that tourists and locals alike are allowed to drive their cars
on the beach, though at considerably less speed (10mph). As many
as 10,000 vehicles roam Daytona's beach on busy weekends.
Besides
driving, the beach is great for walking, jogging, volleyball, surfing,
and bicycling. In addition, the swimming and bodysurfing at Daytona
Beach are as good as it gets anywhere in Florida. Beach accesses
are located every few blocks along A1A the entire 10 miles of Daytona
and Daytona Beach Shores. Off beach parking is available at lots
adjacent to the beach at no cost, while beach parking is $5.00 per
day. Beach accesses at Daytona Beach feature concessions, lifeguards,
restrooms, picnic tables and showers. A boardwalk runs along the
shoreline in the heart of town, giving it a Atlantic City atmosphere.
The center of activity is the 1,000-foot long pier, which also offers
some great surf fishing and a sky tram that offers a birds eye view
of the beach and surrounding area.
